A representation of the 8 pounders that were on the HMS Surprise in the movie "Master and Commander, the Far Side of The World". The 0.68 caliber black powder barrel was purchased from Traditions Firearms Co. Black Powder. The carriage and the gun station is made from scrap wood- Lester's shop is set up to mill his own lumber for his models. He named this cannon "Sudden Death" after the one shown in the movie. The cannon can be fired on special occasions with a charge of 120 gr ffg black powder and cotton balls as wadding. It makes a pretty good bang. Built by L. Palifka.
Three half hulls carved from basswood on a cherry back board. From the top going down, the first is the L.A. Dunton, The second one is "Schemer" A racing yacht design in the late 19th century--one of the "Sandbaggers". Built in 1871 in Jersey City, New Jersey, it was a successful racer till 1905. The third boat in the photo is of a lobster boat designed and built by Eric Dow in 1973. He is the instructor up at the Wooden Boat School that teaches the Half Hull course. This Hovercraft Griffon 2000TDX model (RC) is 1:24-scale and is 30 inches long. Three motors are used; a 4.5 inch lift fan to provide lift and inflate the skirt, and two 6 inch ducted propellers for propulsion. Rudders provide steering. Year built 2021 by Ian Sanderson.
